openvms & gnu/hurd

got my openvms license so now i am just waiting on the software cdrom to arrive. so in the mean time i decided it would be a good idea to get gnu/hurd L1 running in virtualbox. not as easy as it sounds. especially the networking. but after many tries i got it. in the end it required a host only adapter bridged to the virtual interface. using my vax emulator to run openbsd/vax and telnet to decuserve to read the forums. retro computing at its finest!

virtualization

got all my i386 bsd vm's running gnome. no small feat. also upgraded virtualbox to 3.1, quite nice. and i discovered simh. it emulates the vax and pdp series among others. got netbsd/vax and openbsd/vax running on it. also i purchased an openvms hobbyist license so i am awaiting the arrival of that software so i can run it on simh on the vax emulator. retro computing at its finest.

chrome os

well last night i cross compiled google's new operating system, chrome os on my 64 bit system on a usb stick and then installed it on my 32 bit netbook. very nice. it boots in 7 seconds! i really like it. everything runs inside the browser and is sand boxed. free, fast, secure, just the way i like it. also now running the chrome browser as my default browser on my 64 bit system. boy is it fast! google is really making some useful products. for me at least.

folding client info

updated to fci-1.5.1 so my protein folding website now works again except for the rotating molecule gif. i think i can resolve that though given enough time. be sure to check it out. those of you in the know have the url already.

goodbye emacs

a shocking developement! i have to give up emacs. seems w3m-el is broken and always tries to reinstall itself when you run synaptic. bummer. ah well back to my old friend screen in the console. so my editor of choice will now be vim. better get out the cheat sheet of commands. i am a little rusty at vim. of course i also have my oreilly book "learning the vi editor" to fall back on. and so it goes.

in the console

just having fun in the console today enjoying my framebuffer. thats right i got a 2048x1536 framebuffer working on ubuntu with grub2. rather nice. also got w3m and links2 to respect gpm. never could get that done in gentoo. twittering and blogging from emacs in the console also today. emacs in a framebuffer that size can't be beat. also chatting on irc on the central iowa linux users group (#cialug) channel with emacs. other than that not alot going on.
